Toilet Clogs
If your toilet clogs, here's what to do:
- Stop flushing: The moment you notice a clog, refrain from flushing the toilet further, as this can worsen the problem and lead to an overflow.
- Gather supplies: Grab a plunger, rubber gloves, and a bucket or towels to contain potential spills.
- Plunge carefully: Use the plunger with a firm seal around the drain hole and apply downward pressure. Pump vigorously to dislodge the clog. Repeat as necessary.
- Check water level: If the water level remains high after plunging, wait for it to recede before attempting to flush again.
- Prevent future clogs: Dispose of toilet paper and waste properly, and avoid flushing non-flushable items. If clogs persist, consider professional plumbing assistance.
Sink / Shower Clogs
When your sink or shower clogs, follow these steps:
- Stop using the drain: Immediately stop using the affected fixture to prevent water overflow and further blockage.
- Remove visible debris: If you can see the blockage (e.g., hair in a shower drain), use gloves to remove it. Be cautious not to push it further down.
- Boiling water: Try pouring boiling water down the drain to dissolve soap and grease buildup.
- Plunger: Use a plunger for sinks and showers just as you would for a toilet, creating a tight seal and plunging firmly to dislodge the clog.
- Chemical drain cleaner: As a last resort, consider using a chemical drain cleaner, following the product's instructions carefully. However, avoid using these too frequently to prevent pipe damage.
